A Seamless File to Use as a Background Image:

(beginner)

An image file that is used as a background to a web page, a table, or a table cell will 'tile'; i.e., repeat over and over until all the abailable space has been used up. But: unless an image file has been specifically designed to function as a background, the file will show the edges of the image used to create them: there is a 'seam' around the edges of the small tiles. When a larger image is used to tile in a background, the effect is at best distracting, at worst it makes the page content almost illegible.

This tutorial shows how to create a background that will be smooth and seamless. (Note: requires an image-editing program, such as CorelPaint or Photoshop)

1. Open a new page in PhotoShop or another image editor, and size it 175x175, with a resolution of 72ppi.

2. Fill in the background with a web-safe color (in the RGB spectrum, web-safe colors use values from 0 - 255, in increments of 51. Thus, in either the Red, Green, or Blue fields, enter one of the following color values: 0, 51, 102, 153, 204, 255; with 0 0 0 being black (and corresponding to #000000), and 255 255 255 being white (and corresponding to #FFFFFF).

3. Pick a new color for the foreground color, and select the paintbrush tool. Select a medium brush.

4. Paint shapes on the colored layer, being careful not to touch the edges of the document.

5. Select Filters - Other - Offset, and choose wraparound

6. Set a value of 75 p across and 75 p down.

7. Apply filter.

8. Paint more shapes.

9. Apply filter.

10. Paint more shapes.

11. Apply filter.

12. One more time!

Export your masterpiece as a .gif.

Use it as a background in a page.
